Ok, I’ll admit it. I am a total sucker for intertwined stories, i.e. Babel, Amores Perros, and the best of all – Pulp Fiction. Now I can add Parallels to my list.
Parallels had me hooked from the first episode, ‘Beauty’. We often wonder what goes on behind closed doors. There are things that we don’t want even our closest friends to know. We also don’t realize how much more people might know about us than we may assume. Parallels exposes the realities behind the closed doors. Although many of the stories have a dark tone illustrating domestic violence, obsession and heartbreak, there is a thread of hope and redemption running through the series. It’s not all doom and gloom, there is some wonderful comic relief, especially in Episode 6 ‘Choice’. Creator Steven Bennett has assembled an impressive cast* to portray his disparate characters. Some actors we see in only one episode, and others have storylines that connect them throughout the series.
One more confession from me – I also love dangling endings. As much as I love this series, I look forward to seeing more from Steven Bennett, and hope that if it’s a second series we can see some new characters and story lines intertwined as in Season 1.
I urge everyone to binge watch this terrific series – you won’t be sorry you did.
