Donny Hoyle is right, I totally suck at Photoshop. In my defense, I’ve only just started using it and I still have no idea what I’m doing. Fortunately, Donny (who, like the rest of the show, sprung from the fever dreams of the Big Fat Institute for Advanced Interactive Design’s Matt Bledsoe and Troy Hitch) knows quite a bit about the Adobe program which has become synonymous with photo manipulation.
It’s bizarre that a show which began as a parody of how-to videos has ended up winning a Webby Award for “Best How-To” but that speaks to the intelligence with which the show is crafted. Donny is a sad, pathetic character, who seems like he’s just one more bad break away from either suicide or homicide; but damn! That guy knows him some photoshop.
As Donny mutters about the terrible things going on his life we also get to see his computer screen and watch as he clicks, drags, selects, transforms and magic wands his way into some pretty hysterical pictures. My favorite is the action shot of the attorney running away from an explosion (according to Donny, he’s just blown up a courtroom with his mind) but they’re all good.
The show has spawned several spin-offs including “Sn4tchbuckl3r’s Second Chance” and “You Suck at Photoshop: Top Secret Edition” which says a lot about the success of the show. The writing is excellent, the production values can’t help but look good, but it’s the hapless Donny who brings it all together. Who knew it was possible to enjoy Photoshop demos? I mean, assign from Matt, Troy, Donny and the folks at My Damn Channel, of course.
Seriously, even if you don’t use Photoshop (and, by the way, you should) check out these videos. Much like with “The Joy of Painting,” participation isn’t as important as sitting back and enjoying what’s happening right in front of you.
